What is hip replacement surgery?

A hip replacement is a specialised type of surgery that involves replacing a damaged or degenerated hip with a new, prosthetic one. Modern technology affords us a selection of incredible prosthetics depending on how degraded the hip has become, including partial and total hip replacement, revision prosthesis and hip resurfacing.

What does a hip replacement involve?

Firstly, the anaesthetist will administer a general or regional anaesthetic as the operation takes 60 to 90 minutes. I will then go about replacing your degraded hip with a new, prosthetic one. There are a number of materials available for the replacement, including stainless steel, titanium, alloys, chromium, titanium and even durable plastics. All of the prosthetics used are incredibly durable, and designed to work just like a normal hip would.

What is knee replacement surgery?

A knee replacement surgery involves the removal of the damaged knee joint itself, and fitting an implant in its place. This straightforward procedure aims to bring back function to the knee and eliminate any pain experienced from the damaged joint.

What does a knee replacement involve?

A knee replacement surgery lasts around 90 minutes, following a general or spinal anaesthetic. I go about removing any cartilage and the damaged or worn knee joint and replace it with a prosthetic knee. Depending on the area that is affected, I can use implants for different parts of the knee, including the lower end of the femur, the upper end of the tibia or at the back of the kneecap. There are many factors that go into the specifics of what will be done during the procedure, as every injury is unique.
