Patellofemoral pain, also known as anterior knee pain, affects around one third of us at one point or another. If you are having problems with your knee, such as sharp pain in front of the knee or a feeling that is about to give way, you may be dealing with patellofemoral pain.

What causes patellofemoral pain?

The most common cause of this type of injury is through over-exerting yourself. Chondromalacia patellae, also known as runners' knee, is one of the most common complaints around the knee. This tends to be from picking up a new sport or exercise routine, but there are a number of other potential causes, such as jobs that require a lot of kneeling.  Other causes can include being overweight, wearing the wrong type of footwear and a weakness in your thigh and buttock muscles.

What is my outlook if I have patellofemoral pain?

Generally speaking, it is very treatable provided you make the correct changes. More often than not, adjusting your exercise routine and properly managing your weight can go a long way to addressing this type of complaint, provided it is not too serious.

What are the symptoms of patellofemoral pain?

It is normally a relatively apparent issue after diagnosis, as the symptoms tend to direct things. Pain is most commonly felt as a dull, aching pain that can affect either or both knees. It will probably become a sharper, more noticeable pain around the front or back of your kneecap when you begin exercising. Bending the knee can exacerbate the pain greatly, such as performing squats or going up and down stairs.

What can you do for my patellofemoral pain?

As mentioned, normally being mindful of how you are exercising, as well as managing your weight, can go a long way to resolving patellofemoral complaints. The next step is pain management, which is usually achieved through anti-inflammation drugs. In some cases, surgery can help treat severe patellofemoral pain that is not responding to other treatments.
